Essentials of Breast Examination

This online, self-study course introduces undergraduate nursing students to the essential breast health elements of the MammaCare Method of Breast Examination, referred to as the 5 Ps: Palpation, Pressures, Pattern, Perimeter and Positions. Students will practice each of the 5 Ps using a MammaCare® Teaching Breast Model. Breast health knowledge and exam practice results are available to faculty.

Introduction to Clinical Breast Exam Standards and Practice

This online, self-study course introduces graduate students to the techniques of proficient clinical breast examination using the 5 Ps of the MammaCare Method.

Each student receives two MammaCare® Teaching Breast Models synchronized with interactive exercises that teach proper palpation and search techniques. Students learn to detect small, tactually accurate tumors in the opaque breast model while reducing false positive detections.

The new online lump discovery tool allows students to confirm lump detections, and review false positives.

MammaCare Clinical Breast Exam Simulator-Trainer

The MammaCare CBE Simulator-Trainer is an advanced web-based clinical training platform that teaches, measures, and verifies the user’s breast exam skills.

A digital “clinical instructor” guides students through four training modules, assessing progress and providing corrective feedback in real time.

Within 2-3 hours of instruction and palpation practice, the system quantifies performance, corrects examination deficiencies, and reports user competencies to supervisors. To complete the training protocol, users are required to reliably detect all suspicious masses (<0.5cm – 1.0cm) without increasing false positives.

Improving Public Health

This training system, developed and validated with the support of the National Science Foundation, was adopted to train Veterans Administration clinical staff in the Woman Veterans Health Program and is now used to train nurses in CDC-sponsored National Breast and Cervical Early Detection and Prevention Programs (NBCCEDP), as well as numerous U.S. colleges of nursing and medicine.

Statewide Training for BCCP Programs

Since 2018, MammaCare has been collaborating with state BCCP programs to deliver low-cost, evidence-based clinical breast exam training to providers spread across urban and rural point-of-care locations.

BCCP Providers learn to perform evidence-based CBEs using the web-based, MammaCare CBE Simulator-Trainer at their facility and have the potential to earn continuing education credits upon completion. Statewide clinical breast exam competencies are reported to DPH administrations.
